Commissioner Urges Employers To Avoid Ho-Ho-Holiday Over-Withholding

Hartford  - Connecticut Department of Revenue Services (DRS) Commissioner Kevin B. Sullivan is again reminding employers to take special care when calculating income tax withholding for employees with unusual earnings during the holiday season. Said Sullivan, “I’m sure no one wants to see employees earning extra income for the holidays get ‘Scrooged’ by inaccurate over-withholding. For new seasonal employees, employees earning holiday over-time or employees receiving end of year bonuses, we want to remind employers and their payroll processors  not  to treat the unusual income as if it is part of the employee’s income all year. http://ct.gov/drs/cwp/view.asp?Q=492366&A=1436

The Growing Threat of Child ID Theft: What it is, how it's discovered, and clearing the record, after the crime.

Image
As most recent tax filers know claiming a child deduction on your income tax requires you to apply for and have a social security number for each child you are claiming. This has led to a new form of identity theft; Child ID theft. Given that a child may not have a "credit check" done for 18 to 25 years the opportunity for identity thieves to go undetected is multiplied significantly. As recently reported by Bob Sullivan at The Redtape Chronicles on msnbc.com , a Carnegie Mellon University report published by Richard Power, a distinguished fellow at the school's CyLab research center, revealed that child ID theft is much more pervasive than previously imagined by most people who are aware of this type of crime.

Protecting Your Identity When Preparing and Filing Your Tax Returns

Image
This is the time of year when personal, tax-related information is prepared and forwarded as part of the tax filing process – thereby putting much sensitive data potentially at risk of loss and theft. I tend to agree with those who believe that most American taxpayers now are careful to properly shred their paperwork with sensitive information before disposing of it.  However, given the huge proliferation of criminal schemes and high-tech scams designed to pilfer and misuse the personal information of millions of victims, it’s very clear that shredding alone is not nearly enough to protect our personal identity and funds.
